Summary
It had only been about two weeks since he and Travis’s conversation in the bathroom. It was the first and only time Sal had ever heard Travis cry, or even be remotely vulnerable. Ever since then, he and Travis hadn’t spoken. Travis always had his eyes glued to his paper during class no matter how long Sal would stare to try and get his attention. But wherever Sal would look back at his own paper, he would swear that Travis would give occasional glances in his direction.

“If I could just fix all this somehow, I would. I’d make Water and I friends again, and I’d take us somewhere better, and I’d get away from you.”
“Okay. Ouch? Weird thing to say when you’re in tears in my arms.”
“I know. I’m emotional. I’m weird when I’m emotional. Emotions are weird.”
He nodded. He knew exactly how she felt. But he wasn’t about to admit that. Instead, he changed the subject. “You sound tired.”
“It’s been a hell of a week,” she replied quietly, sinking into him a little further. He let himself relax a little too. “I haven’t gotten much sleep.”
“Don’t you want to go back to the dorms, then? You and Water have separate rooms. You won’t actually have to talk to him. Not until you’re ready.”
“No.” She shook her head. “No. I… I don’t want to leave right now. I want to stay here. And I want you to stay here too, with me.”
