Summary
She should have known leaving Vaggie in Hell was impossible.
As a ghost - she has to be, she can’t be fucking back - she stands at the foot of Lute’s bed. She has a surreal quality to her - space and time warp around her, Lute can sense it. She’s faded around the edges, at the center. She isn’t breathing. Her single remaining eye stares at Lute, its glare unnaturally sharp and piercing. Through some unholy power, Lute can feel it stab her, a burning pain in her mind and chest.
Blood that’s far more bright and shining than it should be pours without end from where her eye and wings once were. It drips down her, tracing vivid golden paths on her body. Lute’s eyes follow them, rapidly, unconsciously.
And for all she is unnatural and impossible and surreal, she is also so very very real. She’s there, right in front of Lute. Just a few feet away. Even though she’s faded and wavering, the sense she is there pervades every thought in Lute’s mind.
“What the hell are you?” Lute demands, and her voice does not shake. She cannot let it.

Summary
“Wait!” Lute grabbed her arm and yanked her back before she could get very far. It threw Vaggie off balance and she stumbled, wincing. Lute yielded her a stilted apology.
But Vaggie really needed to go treat her wound. “What?”
“Whatever happened, you shouldn’t be walking around injured.” She paused, remembered the dark red blood all over her own and Vaggie’s uniform and what they’d been doing for the past 24 hours. “You shouldn’t be walking around any more than you already have. You’ll make it worse, and then you’ll get an infection, and it’ll never heal, and you’ll train miserably for a week. You’ll be useless. Come on,” she said, “I’ll carry you.”
“Huh?”

Summary
“Any last words?” Lute teases, grin so wide both on and beneath her mask it feels as if her face is going to split apart.
Vaggie opens her mouth to say something, probably something blasphemous that Lute would stab her again for, but only shining golden blood spills out. She coughs: once, twice. Then she sighs one final time and goes still.
Dead. She’s dead.

Summary
“What did you do to her?” Vaggie demanded, shoving Lute up against the wall. “Where is she?”
Lute narrowed her eyes, sneered, but did not fight against the pressure on her collarbone. Really, she didn’t seem to have much of a problem with that at all. “That’s not your concern."

Summary
Vaggie collapses in front of the dumpster, exhaling deeply and closing her eye. Her spear falls to the ground beside her. It's pitiful that she's already this exhausted. Despite knowing this, she doesn't get up. Not yet. She isn't ready yet.
It feels like she’s waiting for something. Something that will change the entire trajectory of her life. She has no idea what that something is, or why this strange idea has come upon her all of a sudden. Maybe she’s going insane.
Performing a morbid facsimile of a peaceful rest, she sits there for a while with her eye closed. For a short time, she lets herself think about nothing, feel nothing, ignore everything. It’s almost nice.
Then, as suddenly as it arrived, the feeling of waiting for something disappears with a jolt. Her eye shoots open, she jumps forward, and her heart rate spikes. She looks around wildly, scanning the alley for threats. There has to be something triggering her panic, something she can’t detect but a sixth sense of hers can. She discovers nothing.
She's alone.
