Summary
“Grey trusted me to do his job, and to do it well. Me. He may as well have handed me the keys to the city.” Tim murmured, his voice cracking just a little, the noise barely audible, as he continued to battle in the wage of a war against his emotions. “I don’t want to let him down. I don’t…” He sucked in a deep breath. “I don’t want to let you down.”
— Or a post 8x04 one-shot where, in an unusual turn of events, Lucy is the one to comfort Tim…but first she has to pry the truth out of him.

“I saw that girl, scared, vulnerable, desperate for someone who could understand, blaming herself for what happened to her, running every single moment that she was held captive through her mind and scanning for things that she could’ve done differently, ways that she could’ve saved herself, and I saw me.” Lucy sucked in a sharp breath, the next words catching in her throat. “I saw the me five years ago that felt so… so broken and alone.”
— Or a post 8x03 one-shot where Lucy and Tim talk about love, life and survival, and finally lay the hardest thing to happen to them to rest.

“Am I a bad cop?”
The words came seemingly out of nowhere, lurching Tim out of his thoughts and back into reality.
Or, maybe it wasn’t reality, because there was no way in hell that Lucy Chen was asking him if she was a bad cop.

Summary
The moment she hears the words ‘serial killer’, Lucy can feel her pulse quicken.
It’s not a new reaction for her. It happens every serial killer case that they work, and there have been multiple. This one, though…something just feels different about this one.
(Or: After a hard day working a serial killer case that hits far too close to home, Lucy finds herself needing somewhere safe to go. It’s no surprise that her somewhere safe will always involve Tim.)

Summary
Tim Bradford's pride and joy has always been his mother's beloved bakery, 'Cake a Diem'.
In the nine years of owning the bakery, Tim's life had splintered slightly, glued back together only to be smashed into smithereens.
Tim Bradford had gained and lost everything far more times than any human being should ever have had to, and yet one thing still remained, one thing had kept him sane and given him the will to keep going - the bakery.
He had always known that it had not only saved but changed his life in more ways than one, but he never expected for it to give him something that he was so certain he would never experience again in his lifetime.
He had never, not once, even dared to think that his quaint little bakery would bring him something, bring him someone, that he had been searching for for as long as he could remember.
It was a ridiculous notion, he thought.
That is, at least, until Lucy Chen walked into the bakery, her brown eyes red and puffy, filled with tears and heartache, mascara smudged across her face from where she'd clearly been crying, and suddenly his world had been turned on its axis once more.

Summary
She never should've gone down there alone.
This was all his fault, and he doesn't know how he's supposed to deal with that.
Especially if Lucy, God forbid, didn't pull through.
(Or, Lucy gets hurt and Tim spirals)

Summary
Just as things are beginning to look up, to return to a stilted sense of normalcy, between Tim and Lucy, a tragedy strikes and Tim finds himself regretting everything he's left unsaid.

Summary
Every day that he woke up, Tim prayed (to a God that he wasn't even sure that he believed in) that he wasn't currently or becoming like his dad, yet every time he looked in the mirror, every time he loses his temper or says something out of line, it's all he can see.
(Or Tim gets unpaid suspension, goes home and realises some things that he should've realised a long time ago)

When Tim and Lucy broke up, there was one factor that Tim had forgotten about, and that factor came in the form of a 5'5 teenage college student.

Summary
"I was just sat there, thinking about Lucy and drinking. I turned my phone off." He paused for a moment, waiting on the completely crowded waiting area, a large portion of that his fellow officers.
Well, his fellow officers except for Lucy.
A sense of dread immediately settled into his gut as he opened his mouth to ask the question he was dreading of hearing the answer to. "Where's Lucy? Is she okay?
(Or, while Tim is wallowing in self-pity and self-hatred when Lucy gets hurt and nearly dies, finally putting some things into perspective)

Summary
Her nightmares, while they weren't as frequent as they used to be, were still hanging over her head like a rain cloud, but every time that she woke up, gasping for air, scratching at her throat, desperately seeking something, someone, to show her that she wasn't with Caleb, he'd been there. Tim was there to hold her, whisper to her that she was safe, that he'd gotten to her in time.
But now, all of a sudden, Tim wasn't there anymore. He wasn't there to hold her while she woke up, to calm her and piece her back together again after she broke.
(Or Lucy's night terrors get worse after the breakup, and one night she accidentally calls Tim.)

Summary
Now, as he sat by her hospital bed waiting for her to wake up after he'd nearly lost her for good this time, he wished he could go back in time and pushed back. Pushed to stay, to tell her the truth.
He knew that he could trust her, that they were better together than they were apart, that they'd come up with a plan, together, the way that they had for the last three years.
God, how had he been so fucking stupid? How had he not realised that just being close to her had put her at risk? Telling her why wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference - they still would've made a beeline straight for her because Lucy was, is and always will be Tim's weak spot, and everyone knew it.
(Or when Tim listens to Lucy's demand to leave, she refuses to let this be. She needs to know what's going on with Tim...even if it puts her life at risk)

Summary
"Oh yeah?" He whispered as he helped her settle down on her side of the bed. "What does our future look like?"
Lucy smiles a little at that, and it forces his own lips up in a small quirk. "Beautiful." She whispers drowsily and she can feel that blissful pull of sleep nagging at her, but also the anxiety that had begun raging in her stomach at the prospect of yet another nightmare waking her, and Tim, up before they had to go into work. "It looks beautiful, Tim. It looks like all I've ever wanted."
(Or a pure fluffy piece of fluff where Lucy finds out and tells Tim that she's pregnant, with a little bit of Lucy freaking the fuck out in the middle)

Summary
He exuded pure evil, if Lucy was being honest. His presence would've been unsettling even if she hadn't been a cop and known all about who he was, what he was doing.
"Oh, a cop." He said, a sly grin spreading across his face. "I've always wanted to do one of those."
(or Lucy shadows Angela and Nyla when something goes completely wrong. Lucy gets hurt, and Tim? Well, Tim just breaks.)

Summary
In the end, they didn't share those words for the first time in a way that either of them would've expected.
It wasn't over a heated argument, another near death experience, it wasn't even just a casual slip of the tongue over breakfast as they kissed right before they got ready for work. No, instead it came out naturally but very unexpectedly on a Tuesday evening.
(We know that Lucy and Tim love each other, but this is my spin on how they told each other for the first time)
