When they were together, Luke only wanted Marius with him when he inevitably succumbs to his illness.
When they drifted apart, Luke had to watch Marius walk away from him when the NXX Team disbanded for good.
When he is alone, that's when Luke discovers just how much of his life he still has left to live.
Or: Luke takes his time dealing with his illness, recovering from the years he was ill, getting his shit together, and maybe admitting that he's still in love with the same boy he let slip from his fingers years ago.

“Mr. Pearce has been showing a lot of improvement since he was admitted, so we believe we can clear him for discharge. However, he’s not the same person he was when he came in. Within the past few weeks or so, we have started to notice some...cognitive decline.”
The doctor hands Marius a brochure from across the desk for...living with people with dementia?
“What?” Marius looks down uncomprehendingly at the cheery models on the front, a woman pushing her balding father in a wheelchair. “Isn’t—I mean, Luke’s not even 30 yet, why would he have dementia?”
Luke's illness gets worse, causing not just his body, but his brain to deteriorate. Marius swears to be at his side through all of it, good and bad, no matter the toll on his own mind.

His words are clumsy but they keep coming, like they want to be heard. “He doesn’t talk as much anymore, he’s getting nightmares, we’ve been homeschooling him now because of everything but sometimes he can’t stand whoever the tutor of the week is if I’m not there. I’m the only one aside from Dad that he trusts, and Dad is busy, and it’s complicated, okay, it’s—”
“I don’t doubt that it is,” Miss Santos interrupts, speaking slowly. “But it’s so complicated that it’s taking a toll on you. People can tell. And you can too, can’t you?”
Despite the clear sky outside, Giann feels a chill inside of him spiderwebbing outwards.

Or: Luke is a famous actor in the show Stellar Glory. His character is often shipped with Marius’ character in the show. Luke has to be careful with his feelings if he doesn’t want others to figure out the blurry line between his acting and reality.

Artem blinked at her words, his lips turned apart following his surprise. Her green eyes flickered with determination to make her words a reality. For him, all of this was already enough as it was, but he knew nothing he would say would be able to deter her. Hence, he smiled softly and responded:
