Summary
Unlike with most of his other classmates, Claude hadn’t kept tabs on Ashe Ubert over the years. He was a late recruit to the Golden Deer, a sweet-faced boy whose home inevitably became swept up in pointless warfare. When he didn’t return to the monastery alongside the others, Claude assumed the worst.
So when Ashe appeared like a fallen angel in the flames of Ailell, supporting Lord Gwendal’s troops, the sight closed tight around Claude’s heart. He didn’t draw a full breath again until Ashe collapsed into their professor’s arms in relief.
Claude did keep tabs on Ashe when they returned to Garreg Mach.

It was the opportunity of a lifetime. Instead, the shelves of framed platinum records and GRAMMY statuettes loomed judgmentally over her, posters of world-famous musicians looking down as if she were an imposter in this hallowed space.

They’d met a little over a month ago, in the pet food aisle at the supermarket. They were buying the same cat food—Ashe for his tortie Violet, Caspar for his tabby affectionately dubbed ‘Jackass.’ Afterward, they’d sat at the dingy picnic table outside the entrance and talked for another thirty minutes, meandering through various topics until Caspar had eventually invited Ashe to stop by the gym where he worked, so he could teach him jiu-jitsu.
Ashe wasn’t terribly interested in jiu-jitsu. He was interested in that smile, those shoulders, that vivid blue hair.
