Summary
"... Eiji," Ash murmurs. The word tastes like a prayer on his tongue, like a holy fire that burns a sinner like Ash. Burns away everything else that he's used to tasting. "Eiji. Eiji."
"I am here, Ash."
Ash does start shaking again, and Eiji moves a little closer. Doesn't quite touch him, but it's clear that Ash can bridge the gap if he wants to.
He doesn't.
He thinks about how Eiji approached him so slowly when he hugged Ash; the way he made all of his movements clear, like he was being careful with Ash. How Ash knows that if he had flinched or pulled away—if he had even just tensed up a little, Eiji wouldn't have touched him at all.
Is that trust? Is that terrifying?
"Foxx was cruel," Ash whispers.
Salvation without redemption.

Summary
It's late.
Ash knows, on some level, that he shouldn't be out of the room by himself right now. It's not safe, and—and it's not allowed.
It's just that, sometimes, he'd like to pretend he can forget what he is. Pretend he hasn't taken it to heart yet, that it's not as branded on his soul as it is on his body.
While staying at Max's house, Ash gets up for a drink of water.

Summary
"Ash?" Max calls softly.
"Shit," Ash hisses. "Shit shit shit."
"Hey, it's okay. What's going on?" Max flips the light on, but that might have been the wrong move, because—
Ash drops to the ground, cowering from the light—from Max, rather—bringing his hands up to block his head, his face. "I'm sorry!" Ash cries. "I'm sorry; I'm sorry; I'm sorry."
"What? Hey, why are you—?" Max takes a step toward Ash. Another mistake.
"Stay away from me!" Ash says, voice a panicked mess. It's not even loud—he probably won't wake Jess or Michael. He just sounds ... scared.
Max crouches down a few feet away from Ash, trying to get on his level instead of towering over him. "Hey. Hey, kid. Do you know who I am?"
Ash nods, surprising Max. Does he really? Does he think Max is someone else, or—?
A terrifying thought occurs to Max, suddenly. Is Ash afraid of him, even knowing who he is?
A teenager gets up for a midnight snack. A father reassures him that it's okay to do so.

Summary
When Ash dies, a glitch in the matrix happens and instead of going to the land of the dead or whatnot, he lands in an alternate universe with another Eiji, another Shorter, another everyone. And another Ash. Who goes to highschool. And who has never heard of gangs, papa Dino, or baseball coaches…
The Ash and Eiji of this world look so happy.
Ash should leave them alone. It would be unfair to disrupt their peace and innocence.
But this is his chance to talk to his soulmate again.
