Breaking the rules was still a thrill.
To get up on the roof, they had to sneak into the forbidden fire escape stairs. They brought a dish towel from the kitchen to jam between the door to leave it open for just a crack behind them because it doesn’t open from the outside.
Then they climbed the four flights of stairs from their apartment on the 27th floor to the rooftop. The stairs were nondescript, betraying how they were not meant to be seen by the dull gray paint that adorned the plain concrete walls and steps, a contrast to the studied warm beiges and wood-paneled flooring throughout the common areas of the rest of the high-rise.
They used to stop by the roof on a whim – after dinner, when no interesting shows were on; monthly, to catch a glimpse of the full moon; on early winter mornings, whenever it snowed, so they could cup their hands and watch the fresh snowflakes dissolve on their warm palms.
Spontaneity was harder with age.
