He leans back against the sofa and watches her, the way her body sways with the music, how her eyes seem to glitter as she smiles, the way she’s able to carry multiple conversations and look interested in each one of them. She slows down, a little breathless, and then grabs onto Luca’s arm for support. She laughs at something he says, or at something someone else says. The longer Carmy looks at her, the worse he feels. His stomach digs itself into a deeper, uglier pit, and yet, he can’t look away.
