A lullaby hums all around him, seemingly behind him at all times, no matter which way he rotates. It’s not exactly fair, he thinks to himself, that Freddy gets to use all these terrifying powers while Quentin can only run, scream, cry until he’s jolted awake by the blaring of his alarm clock, or his concerned dad who heard him scream, or Nancy making sure he doesn’t die in his sleep like all of their other friends already did. He’d always awake just moments before metal claws could strike a lethal blow, and he always wondered if that was intentional on Freddy’s part or not. He couldn’t tell if he was keeping him alive to feed his lust for fear, to feed his power until it grew strong enough that Quentin would no longer be a threat. That he could just swipe him away like a fly and go on to claim the rest of his revenge.

They were a mindless seeming creature, who chirped in subtle discomfort when the bandages wrapping their head hitched up their horn on the side. They couldn’t figure out exactly what to do about it, aside from making such a sound and kneading prickly claws into the soft dirt beneath them, upturning the ground until their new friend would come over to fix it for them.
