Alex’s expression shifted from confusion to frustration. “For a year, I’ve been trying,” he said, his voice rising. “I’ve been trying to give you space, trying to let you grieve. But I lost him too, Henry. I lost him.” Alex’s voice cracked, and Henry could see the tears glistening in his eyes
“I know you did,” Henry said, his voice softer now. “I know you’re trying, Alex. But I can’t... I can’t do this anymore. It’s tearing me apart, and it’s tearing you apart too.”
“You’re asking me to stop trying?” Alex asked incredulously, his hands trembling as they clenched into fists on the table. “Do you think this is what our son would want? For us to fall apart?”
Henry’s heart clenched at the mention of their son, but he forced himself to stay calm. “He’s not here, Alex. What he would want doesn’t matter anymore. What matters is what we want, what we need.”
Alex’s jaw tightened, his voice trembling with emotion. “And what do you want, Henry? What do you need?”
Henry took a deep breath. “I want a divorce.”

“Somewhere better,” he says, and closes the back door tight.
