Surely Jay was hearing things. That was all. It had been a long night, and he was finally within sight of his true love, the girl who had changed his life, who had meant more to him than the man in the trenches ever had. Stress, perhaps even delusions were natural responses. Poor Nick Carraway was just a stranger for him to project that stress upon.
This resolution was highly relieving. Jay breathed out shakily, regaining control over his facilities once more. That had certainly been a scare. But –
He looked up, directly into the bright green eyes of the man he had fucked during the Great War. Entirely of his own free will. Multiple times.
Or a Great Gatsby AU in which Nick and Gatsby *met* during the war and don’t dare bring it up when they reunite on West Egg. Awkwardness, misunderstandings, and humiliation ensue.

I found myself in Gatsby's bed often in those weeks while he worked up the courage to speak to Daisy Buchanan. It was strange, spending time with him when I knew from the start that nothing would come of it. But I was content to be whatever we were, knowing that when I hit thirty and the summer ended I would have to pull myself together and things would end. But Gatsby remained in perpetual summer, chasing after a memory, until his dreams scorched him on that sweltering day in early August and he ended up floating lifelessly in his pool.

Summary
After his ill-fated Agni Kai, Zuko is cast out of the Fire Nation without even so much as a hope of returning. Dumped on Earth Kingdom shores, he's forced to come to terms with the fact that his father likely wants him dead- and that maybe the Fire Nation was never that great to begin with.
That's the painful part.
The weird part? The weird part is breaking into a nobleman's manor in order to steal food, getting caught and then being hired to protect (babysit) said nobleman's blind daughter. Then again... maybe it's exactly what he needs right now.
(or, toph never got her field trip so now she gets to hog zuko for three whole years)
