“Tim, you need to go to the hospital.” Her voice was still hoarse, the sensation that her larynx had been squeezed two inches higher threatening to make her gag.
“I’m not the only one.” His thumb drew a line along her cheek, stinging the track of her open wound, and she sighed, leaning her jaw into his palm.
“It’s a scrape not a neck injury.”
It seemed to work, and he closed his eyes, taking a breath and nodding softly.
“Okay. Fine. I’ll meet you at the hospital. After the muster. Deal?” He reached out his other hand to her, cupping her face in the pocket of his palms and she should have kissed him then.

Again, her body moved before her brain registered what she was seeing. She was running, tripping over the sand, raising dust all around her. He was a dark pile against the base of the withered tree. His legs stretched out in front of him, back against the trunk, head lolling to one side. His eyes weren’t open.

“Is Sergeant Bradford there?” Aaron was blinking now, pushing his face hard against the barrier as he reached again for Lucy’s neck. Tim felt his blood run cold, Angela and Nyla’s worried glances in his direction doing nothing to ease the pounding of his heart. He stretched out an arm to seize the radio from Nyla, but she was too quick, switching hands and stepping out of his grasp.
“Yes, Aaron. He’s here. We’re all here.”
Thorsen closed his eyes again, shaking his head and taking short, strained breaths.
“It’s just… I can’t…” Aaron shook his head, dropping it to his chest, and Tim felt Angela again slip her fingers into his elbow, steadying this time, staying beside him and all but holding him upright.
“There’s no…” Aaron’s stuttering words were loud in the silence of the briefing room. “She’s not…”
