Tarou paused, noodles dangling midair, hovering at a midpoint between his mouth and toppling onto the table.
“No.”
He didn’t drop dead. The honest truth. Sonoi couldn’t help the soft smile seeping into his facial features. Of course, he was fishing for a moment like this by mentioning the holiday in the first place. Opportunity shined down like a spotlight, and Sonoi was up on that stage in the center of it all.
“Why don’t we go on one then?”
“Valentine’s day is for couples Sonoi, we aren’t dating.”
It was said plain, objective, factual. Like Tarou was reading his grocery list outloud and needed Sonoi to jot it down for him. So sterile, so matter of fact, polite even. Yet, if Tarou wasn’t here besides him Sonoi only knows he would have thrown himself to the floor in something akin to agony. It was not the first time Tarou had done this to him, set all his nerves on fire and left him a writhing mess on concrete. But here, in front of him, that would be uncouth.

What good indeed. The question had gnawed at Tojo ever since he conceptualized his role as one. Ever since it had been handed to him in the form of a deck of cards. Or maybe it had existed beyond that point, and it was only when it was spat back in his face that Tojo understood. Self-realization, on occasion, was a funny thing.
It was his wish when he won the war. To be a hero. To be recognized for his efforts. Acknowledgment of his sacrifices. To be a hero had implications, an unspoken promise that he would be able to make the difficult choices that promised a greater good. And he had proved it.He made a difficult choice.
