But she’s noticed the scar peeking out from his collar, and she’s noticed the odd sort of frailness to him recently. She’d hoped some rest and good food would take care of it, but the more days of rest and good food pass, the more certain she is that it won’t.
“I’d like to have a look at that scar on your chest,” she says.

Yes sir, yes ma’am, reporting for duty. Whatever you did in the last year, Sean Finnerty, they must have been better deeds than all twenty-two years before that; watch yourself, since you’ll never be able to replicate them.
Not Jean, whose strength was her mind, whose whole world went ass over bayonet these past few months, unrecognizable from the last thing she remembered. They couldn’t hold her now. “She’s got to do it on her own,” Sean sighed. “She can handle it.”
Marion spoke so quietly that Sean felt the words through his back more than he heard them. “What if it never comes back to her?”
That was the slippery dark thing down at the root of this that Sean couldn’t face yet. “Then we do it all over again."
