Summary
Draco hates Christmas. He didn't always, but this is the first time he'll be by himself. Without his parents, stuck at Hogwarts. Slowly, he finds solace in a journal left by a mystery student.

Hermione loves Christmas. But this year, she isn't so sure. This will be the first Christmas she'll be by herself. No parents, no friends. On an impulse, she leaves a journal in the library, hoping a kindred spirit will find it and reply. Strangely enough, he does.

“Sorry, sorry,” she interrupted, closing her eyes and pressing a hand to her forehead. “I just…sorry, give me a second to clear my head.”
She refused to explain why the first thing he’d seen when entering her mind was a rather vivid recollection of her last masturbation session. How embarrassing. She thought about walking in a forest – the least sexy thing she could think of – and then doubled down by picturing herself in the Quidditch stands at Hogwarts. In the rain. In January.
“Okay.” She exhaled and met his eyes again. “Okay, it’s safe now. Go ahead.”
He looked dubious but raised his wand and spoke the incantation again.

“Draco’s not actually interested in me. He’s engaged to Astoria Greengrass.” It stung a bit to say it out loud, even though it was the inescapable reality. Ginny knew it. Everyone knew it. “It’s just a bit of fun. Makes the work hours go by a little faster. It’s stimulating—intellectually and physically.”
“Physically, eh?” Ginny lifted a cautiously interested brow.
“Well, just in the sense that it makes my heart race a little.” She picked at a fleck of dirt beneath her thumbnail, embarrassed and exposed by Ginny’s persistent line of questioning. “You know, a little…thrilling.”
“Flirting with Draco Malfoy is… thrilling?”
Or, Hermione and Draco are relentless work flirts, because they think it's all they can ever be. They are mistaken.

She’s miscalculated, staring at him openly, so she captures the abrupt way in which his head snaps up from his work. As a consequence, they’re now looking at each other, which is awkward, but at least he doesn’t know what she’s been thinking about.
And then, Draco, usually still as a graveyard if never as quiet as one, twirls his wand again.
And again.
Watching her all the while, considering her.
Hermione has a good sense for when she’s in danger, or an overwrought system that feels as though she always is, but either way, she slams a barrier around her mind, exerts her own graceless occlumency. He knows.
And worse, he’s driving her insane intentionally.
