Summary
Mike's mind often returns to the quarry, to the day he jumped off the cliff's edge expecting to never again see the dawn of day. He remembers the feeling of falling, the deafening sound of the wind as it rushed pass his ears, the sensation of weightlesness as he tumbled through the air, the mirror-like lake surface. Had he screamed? Mike couldn't remember. Prehaps he had, it was such a long time ago.
He wonders what would've happened had El not been there to save him. That's a lie. Mike knows what would've happened, he would've died; bones broken, body floating in the lake below. The police would find his corpse, there would be a funeral, and everyone would eventualy move on with their lives. His family would be sad, so would the Party, but they would heal and, in time, Mike would be forgotten, a distant memory; unable to cause them anymore harm.
Mike wished El had let him fall.
