The first time Guqqie killed Aimsey, she nearly regretted it.
There was a flicker of remorse, a reminder of how they should feel. She had just killed the person they were supposed to spend the rest of their life with. They should feel regret. Right? That was the normal response. They should feel regret, like he had, as he’d whispered, “I’m sorry,” over and over and over until the phrase sounded like jumbled nonsense — which is all it was, wasn’t it?
Remorse isn’t useful to the dead. It’s nonsensical to apologize to someone after you’ve stabbed them. She knew that from experience. So Guqqie didn’t apologize.
