Summary
In his many years of taking on jobs for too-little pay, there’s one assignment he’s never worked. The other workers call it the “preschool brigade,” the FEDRA-school kids sent out into the field for what they call “work experience” to get them used to the real world. Really, it’s a behavioral tool, he knows, an example of “better act right or you’ll end up like these poor fuckers when you’re grown.”
He's deliberately never worked on one, uninterested in being put in charge of a kid doing a dangerous job they shouldn’t be. The kids that get sent on the preschool brigade are the ones FEDRA doesn’t necessarily care about getting back, after all, and there are things even adults shouldn’t be doing, not as untrained as most of them are.
And then comes the day one of the FEDRA guards assigned to his work detail that leads over a sullen-looking girl, who kicks rocks the entire way.
(an AU in which ellie and joel first meet on job assignments)

Summary
To her own credit, she gives it her best shot when the agents–FEDRA, she notes grimly, though their uniforms are battered and faded in a way that suggests they’re not exactly the cream of the crop–spill out and surround her. She’s nothing against the guns pointed at her, but she knows she damn fucking well won’t go down without a fight. She kicks and scratches and claws with everything she’s got, but she’s one skinny, unarmed 15 year old against a group of trained adults, and in no time, they have her facedown on the ground, one of them kneeling on her back so that she can’t move and can barely breathe.
“Get-the fuck-off me!” She wheezes, trying futilely to get loose, giving it all she has to buck the guard off. Her mouth is slick with the coppery taste of blood from where she’s bitten more than one person, and she spits as she struggles, trying to get it out of her mouth.
There’s a sharp prick of pain in her neck, and the world slowly dissolves into darkness.
(looking to compete with the Fireflies, FEDRA sends agents to capture Ellie to make their own cure) (and this time, Joel isn't right there to protect her)

Summary
Ellie is Joel's daughter. She's fourteen. They live in Boston. Her dad is all she has; she doesn't know a lot about her mom, because her dad doesn't know a whole lot about her mom, either. Ellie is all her dad has, too, so when she gets bitten, and there's suddenly hope for a vaccine, Joel will take her wherever he needs to. He'll do whatever he has to if it gives his daughter a better future. What Joel doesn't realize is getting to the Fireflies will never be worth all they went through to get there.
TLDR/// what if Ellie was Joel's daughter? the events of the first game still takes places. Ellie and Riley still get bitten, Joel and Ellie still get through summer, fall, winter, and spring. Instead of only being a hardened survivor, Joel is also a dad just trying to give his daughter a chance for a better world.

Summary
Being the key to saving humanity is much less glamorous than someone might expect. There’s a lot more bleeding and puking and sweating than she thinks is fair, strictly speaking, and she makes the fun discovery that she loses her shit in an MRI machine when it reminds her of being trapped in a cage, and she has a panic attack so bad Joel almost breaks the machine getting her out.
(She gets sedated before MRIs after that, so she wakes up nauseous and grumpy, but beggars can’t be choosers, and MRI flight risks can’t be vocal about their side effects.)
“Say the word,” Joel always says, when he’s rubbing her back or holding her hair out of the way or letting her clutch his hand while they do a spinal tap, “and we’re out of here.”
“We’re so close,” she always tells him. “They’ll figure it out soon.”
And she believes it, mostly.
Primarily because she has to, if she’s going to keep going.
(the fireflies don't try to kill her, but ellie still has a Very Bad Time in the hospital)

Summary
How could she damn him for saving her? She’d kill a hundred people right now if it meant he'd live. She would do anything just to talk to him one more time, tell him she understood now.
If… if Joel was immune and not her…
Would she have chosen differently?
