Crystal remembers the taste of fish. She remembers the feeling of skin tearing under her teeth, thick and slimy; remembers how the rotten smell filled her nose.
She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, trying to swallow it down—but then she just remembers sharp bones scratching her throat, and dead eyes staring up at her from above a gaping mouth.

Crystal’s fingers are aching. Maybe it’s from how long she’s been holding them still to let the polish dry, but they feel restless; like she wants to curl them around something, do something, make something with them—
Okay, that feeling’s not new. It’s probably not the polish. It keeps cropping up in Crystal’s mind, usually when something good is happening, like she can’t just let herself live in the moment. Like it’s too much to just feel. She has to make it permanent somehow; make it immortal.
“Hey, Niko?” Crystal asks, waiting until Niko pauses the show and turns towards her to continue. “Do you have any paper?”

“Charles, you look…”
Charles dawns a smile that looks more like a wince. “Dashing?”
Tears sting in Edwin’s eyes. He hasn’t seen Charles look like this since the night he died. “I will fix this. I promise.” Edwin’s voice comes out shakily, but Charles looks at him and there isn’t an ounce of doubt in his eyes. He’s shivering slightly, and he thinks he sees tears in Charles’s eyes too. Edwin feels little but doubt right now. Doubt and fear.
“Of course you will,” Charles says.

Charles is infected by a monstrous plant while on a case, leaving him ill and in pain, with Edwin frantically searching for a cure before his time runs out. There only seems to be one, very simple solution, and Edwin would do anything if it means Charles is safe. He just hopes they’ll be okay in the end.
