Summary
The village of Ramsgill offers little to Isa Cygnet beyond her father’s peace and her friendship with neighbour Miss Alice.
She grows increasingly wary of the suffocating nature of the village folk, as well as the lingering gaze of more than one young man.
Meanwhile Miss Alice’s brother, Mr Jasper, makes it near-impossible for her to find a moment of silence. She resents him for his condescension. Yet, it feels as though he is almost familiar. A kind of phantom who knows exactly how to counter her every emotion. To make matters worse, he’s been in her dreams. Every night, clawing at the window to her conscience.
