Dan looks up, and before him, slid carefully between where his splayed hands rest on the floor, is Herbert’s shiny, unscuffed Oxford shoe, white sock arcing delicately from bony ankle into the snug black leather. A fleck of blood is the only thing marring its clinical perfection.
Dan follows the line of Herbert’s leg up to find him looking down at Dan. Dan’s eye contact is greeted with an expectant. “Well?” From Herbert.
“You want me to clean off your shoe?” Dan asks, trying his best to muster up annoyance– this should annoy him. But it does not. -

Eddie almost flinched at the word. “Gross.” He said, then immediately regretted it.
But Chrissy just giggled. “Gross?”
“Yeah, men are gross, dude.”
“I mean, I agree. But it’s funny that you would say that.”
Eddie felt like he should backtrack. “Just reminds me of my dad, the word ‘man.’” Ah yes, because emotional vulnerability was definitely backtracking. Great job, Ed. “Or like, the president. Or cavemen. King Kong.” Eddie mimicked beating his chest in a parody of masculinity.
Chrissy hummed to indicate she was listening.
“I’d rather be like… a formless eldritch being.”
