He'd prepared himself for threats, even rehearsed a response. He'd had nothing prepared for simple gratitude from a man he'd expected to be measuring him for a coffin. He hadn’t expected this. Something in Law’s chest constricted.
"I—" he managed, then stopped, his thoughts failing to catch up.
Shanks watched him struggle for a long three seconds. Something about Law's expression seemed to settle a decision.
"Right," Shanks said, mostly to himself. He nodded once and turned toward the tent flap. "I'm going to go find Luffy."
"Wait," Law said, finally finding his voice. "That's it? You're not going to—"
"I'll be back," Shanks called over his shoulder, already walking.
Or; Law's been shovel-talked by half so many people from Sabo, to Boa Hancock, to Garp, to whoever else since word got out he's dating Luffy. He's braced for one more. What he gets instead is Red-Haired Shanks asking if he's slept, thanking him for the surgery that kept him alive, and then leaving to go scold Luffy on his behalf…? What.

Oh my gosh this fic outlined beautifully my main underlying concern when interacting with this ship. Summed up perfectly with “To the world, his name is now permanently tied to Luffy instead of his own identity.”
I, too, find it important for law to be his own person and for people to recognize him outside of just interacting with luffy. He’s a respectable person in his own right.I know that’s not really what this fic is about, as has been said explicitly in this fic, but it’s nice to have my thoughts be so accurately expressed in writing
Luffy messing up in a way is also appreciated bc I feel like I don’t see that too often. Weird comparison but I also don’t see that too often with robin either. Both cases kind of grate at me bc I don’t like when characters are TOO perfect so this fic is great to alleviate some of that.
I’m looking forward to where this goes! 😁

Summary
Sanji tries to imagine Yonji carrying anything for him at all just to be nice. The daydream falls apart instantly, because Yonji only ever took things from Sanji to break them.
“Do you promise you’ll give it back?” he musters the courage to ask, clinging to the cookbook a kind old woman just sold him, unwilling to let it go without making sure. She had smiled and said she was certain her family’s recipes would be in good hands with him and Sanji doesn’t want to prove her wrong before he gets a chance to even try. “You have to promise.”
Zoro gazes down at him with that inscrutable look on his face he’s worn all day. He could probably take the book from Sanji pretty easily but he doesn’t yank it away or twist his wrist until he lets go. They just stand there, sizing each other up. Sanji’s nerves mount with every second but he doesn’t back down.
Yonji would have hurt him already and laughed about it. The first mate of the Strawhat crew simply says, after enough time that Sanji knows he’s taken it seriously, “Promise.”
