It’s Friday night, and she has a rare Saturday off- the kids are all out, and Hopper was working late, giving her the house to herself. So she brings the entire bottle of red wine with her into the bathroom, and fills the tub with bubbles, and lounges with a racy paperback that she half pays attention to as the temperature cools.

She doesn’t really need the test to tell her what she already knows.
It’s- a formality, in a sense. She sits on the cold tile floor, back pressed to the bathtub as she waits for the egg timer to ding, three strips of plastic balanced precariously on the ledge of the bathroom sink. She’d had to wait until all of the boys and El were out of the house to dig her purchase out of the nondescript paper bag purchased two towns over she’d had shoved in her purse for the last three weeks and assume the familiar position.

almost unconsciously, certainly foolishly, hopper checked his appearance in the mirror before heading out. smoothed down his hair and tried to look less like the crazed parent who forgot to buy his daughter a gift.
“hey, joyce,” he said as he breezed in, bringing with him a gust of cold air at which she visibly shivered.
“hey,” she said, tugging the sleeves of her turtleneck down a little further against the cold. “bit late to be shopping, isn’t it? christmas eve and all.”

Somehow it hadn’t been brought up.
Perhaps it was the whole “the town is literally split in two” thing that didn’t leave much room for the topic to be brought up.
Or the fact that it felt so natural there wasn’t any need to bring it up.
(Or, Joyce and Hopper finally explain their relationship and how Hopper is suddenly risen from the dead, to their bewildered and confused children.)
