Alexis didn’t mean to fall in love with Twyla Sands. It just sort of...happened. She thinks about it more than she’d like to admit, trying to pinpoint the exact moment, but she can’t. It’s like she took a breath one day and suddenly Twyla was there, wrapped around Alexis’s heart the way Twyla’s apron wrapped around her waist.
God, this was a lot to think about during a Monday morning subway commute.

“She truly is your daughter, Alex,” Henry sighs, defeated.
“Fuck off, sweetheart,” he laughs, a soundbite of the sun. Henry forces himself not to physically react, the term of endearment sweet and menacingly familiar coming from Alex’s lips. It’s been years. “You know they’re useful.”
“Ah yes, eyelashes, truly a formidable instrument in managing international relations.”
Alex grins, and Henry is too late to catch the slightest downward lilt on the corner of his mouth, “Worked on you once, didn’t it?”
Oh, did that ache.
(Much had happened since the time Henry had told Alex to leave. Alex had passed the bar, gotten married, had the most beautiful daughter. And Henry, well. He stayed right where he was.)

“The queen wants to show that the Prince and the First Son are still deeply in love and committed to their countries.” Ellen swallows. “They want you to go on a tour of the Commonwealth together, to get the public to see those emails not as a sex scandal, but an invasion of privacy of a wholesome, loving relationship.”
“It was an invasion of privacy,” Alex says. He swallows. “Did they say what would happen if we say no?”
Ellen’s lips pinch tightly at the corners. “Then they will issue a full denial and Henry will tour the commonwealth himself.”
Alex doesn't hesitate. “Tell them we’ll do it. I’m not gonna let him do this alone."
It would kill him. Henry hates this shit. The public parading, the judgment. Having to do all of that, and deny who he is? Alex at least wants to be there, to hold his hand through it. Even if it's just as a friend.
It might kill Alex to pretend, but that’s a small price to pay to ensure Henry—his beautiful, vibrant, funny-as-hell, brilliant ex-not-quite-boyfriend—isn’t killed instead.

Carlos's heart is pounding. He can barely hear over the blood rushing in his ears or see through the fog clouding his mind. Because he knows those eyes. He knows the hand he just shook, and the voice he just heard, although it’s lower and richer than it was over a decade ago, when the man he’d just met was called TK instead of Tyler. He doesn’t know how or why TK is here, in Austin, a lifetime after circumstance ripped them apart and spread miles between them. He doesn’t know how or why the Tyler they’ve been tracking all these months has turned out to be Carlos’s childhood friend, to this day his most cherished relationship, his first heartbreak. He doesn’t know how or why any of this has happened, but it has. He’s completely sure of it. TK – Tyler – didn’t seem to recognize him. But that face is burned into his memory.
