She closed her eyes, like maybe she could hide away as the words left her mouth. "I think I need you to not make it so easy on me," she tried, "Sometimes it feels like you just…let me off."
"Let you off?"
Belly opened her eyes again and turned her head toward him. She could just about make out the shape of his face in the dark.
"Yes." Her throat felt dry. "I just think maybe I need to feel bad about it sometimes, you know? Maybe I need you to…make me feel bad."
The silence that followed was so complete she could hear her heartbeat in her ears.
