Then, out of nowhere, Minho exhaled and muttered, “I think I’m going to retire.”
Chan looked up fast. Minho stared hard at the floor, jaw tight.
“I’m twenty-nine,” he said, voice low and flat. “And I have too much money sitting in accounts I never touch. CLE never charged for housing or food. I don’t owe them anything. And I’m tired, Chan-ah. I’m so—” His voice cracked and he stopped, swallowing the rest. “I’m tired.”
Chan’s chest tightened, but he didn’t interrupt. Minho’s fingers curled against the countertop, knuckles white.
“I don’t want to watch any more kids die. I don’t want to wake up to alarms or check corridors for threats before I walk through them. I don’t want to sleep in rooms where everything echoes. I don’t…” He breathed out shakily. “I don’t want to live like I’m already half-dead.”
Chan didn’t move for a long second.
Then he smiled softly.
“Then I will too.”

“What you did earlier was just stupid,” Minho snapped, the edge returning—but weaker now, crumbling.
Chan’s expression softened as he watched Minho lick his lower lip, tasting remnants of both their blood. “Maybe,” he admitted quietly. “But if the medic is endangered, it’s a loss for everyone.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Minho countered instantly, voice sharp with old wounds. “Self-sacrifice is selfish and—”
“Selfless,” Chan corrected.
Minho grabbed Chan’s hand, pulling it down hard. “No. After you’re dead, everyone else lives with the guilt of losing you when they could have done something differently. You get an exit. Everyone else is trapped.” His voice cracked on the last word, splintering.

“That’s a dangerous dream,” Hyunjin said, but he, too, relaxed as they just gazed at each other like they couldn't get enough. “I could get lost in it. Perhaps I wouldn’t even want to wake up from a dream like this.”
“Hmm, I feel you,” Jeongin said, closing his eyes for a second, imagining being this close to Hyunjin without his mask, without any hidden identities, without secrets. “I want to stay like this forever.”
Or, after having been in love with Hyunjin since the first time he saw him, but never having the courage to talk to him, Jeongin takes the opportunity to get Hyunjin alone at a masquerade ball Jeongin doesn’t really want to be at, until he does.
