Summary
Ava fiddled with the radio until she found a song she liked. She placed her hand on top of Beatrice’s which rested on her thigh. They drove the whole way home listening to the music and admiring the lights.
And it felt like a beginning. Like a scene in a romance movie she had watched one hundred times over. Beatrice had the girl she loved. She was here with Ava, and she loved her back. They had a future with a house and a cat and endless tomorrows.
Beatrice found herself thinking of all the points in their relationship where this could have happened. It was something she did frequently; considering the different outcomes had they mentioned their feelings at different times.

From the road, Ava could only make out their broadest features: a woman in a white tank top, her muscled shoulders tanned from the sun, an axe dangling casually in one hand. She had already placed a log in front of her, and as Ava watched she lifted the axe above her head and swung it downwards in a single fluid motion, the taut muscles of her arms working so perfectly with the axe they might have all been one. The log split easily into two, as though she were cutting through paper, and the woman picked up the two halves to place them into a neat stack nearby.
“Ah,” Schaefer said, catching the line of her gaze, “That’s Beatrice. Your new neighbor. Don’t mind her too much, she’s a little… eccentric.”
Ava liked eccentric. She also liked women who looked like they could tear her in half without too much effort. She had a feeling she was going to like Beatrice a lot.

She probably wears wicker shoes or treats broken bones with laughter or some shit.”

Ava looked up to see a girl about her age slide into the seat next to her. She had long, dark hair with highlights swept into a tight bun, and guarded brown eyes. Ava almost choked on her water.
Ava was notoriously bad at dealing with pretty people, it was something she was working on(and getting virtually nowhere).
“My name is Beatrice, Beatrice Xin,” the girl said. She had a British accent, like Lilith’s but softer. More graceful. She had a calm, cool air about her that simultaneously intimidated Ava and intrigued her. "I'm your history tutor."
