Beatrice gasps at the admission, silent enough to have been an atypically sharp intake of air. She thinks about the choice of word stressed in Ava’s last sentence and how all three would come with different implications, and Ava has chosen the one that places the importance on her.

The world stops because there’s nothing there, a cruel stillness in Beatrice’s veins and laxness to her body as Ava’s shaking hands grab for Beatrice’s wrist, ripping at her bracers so clumsily that the halo flares and the leather-- expensive and combat-prepped, sturdy, strong-- rips under her hands so she can try for the pulse at her wrist.

But to be fair, she’s twenty-two and very new at this. Girls, boys, romance, sex. Life. So what if she chose her personal trainer because she let out a loud “hot damn!” when she saw her picture online, along with all the martial arts she has mastered?
