In all his time knowing Steve, Bucky had been happy to play his part. Watching after Steve, in whatever way he’d let him. But if Steve didn’t need anyone watching his back, what did he need? And why was Bucky the right man to do it?
The words stuck in his throat. It was too earnest, this revelation. Steve wouldn’t understand. He didn’t have an insecure bone in his body. And it was embarrassing, really, to be worried about Steve not liking him anymore. Like he was afraid of not getting asked to the prom.
“Tell you what, doll,” Bucky said, mustering all the charm of his old self, “give those girls a reason to be jealous, and maybe I’ll think about taking you back.”

Bucky liked taking Steve out. He liked watching Steve through the evening. His rosy cheeks getting rosier with each drink. He liked the way Steve’s best dress shirt would unbutton throughout the night, his collar loosening with the hours. He liked the way Steve would raise his voice towards the end of the night, face beaming with the moon. He liked Steve. That was the problem.

“You’re strong.” Stede looks surprised to have said that, and Ed can’t help the smirk that spreads across his face. He was thinking about his arms! Stede raises his eyes to Ed’s and tries to recover, “to have so many tattoos.”
“You’ve fuckin’ stabbed me with a sword, but my tattoos make me strong?” Ed asks, incredulous.
Stede thinks for a moment, “Anyone can get stabbed with a sword. I’ve been. It takes a certain,” he searches for the right word, “Gusto! To get a tattoo.”
And that’s when a thought hits him like a cannonball. “Well if it takes gusto, you should get one. You’ve got loads of gusto.”
