Sometimes it seemed the whole house was against them. There was a darkness lurking in the unseen places—crouched out of sight around every corner, tucked into the ends of long hallways, whispering through the layers of shadow that gathered in the high ceilings—and an answering darkness in the way they played. Gerard, with his vision, dragged them to the edge. Ray, with his drive, held them up against it, the way he’d hold his pick against a string to make it scream.

The man’s hair is dyed purple and there’s a piercing in his ear. He looks exactly like the kind of person that would’ve had Geliy shooting back liquor in a fruitless effort to give himself the courage to ask for his number. The piercing is on the side that suggests that, maybe, if Geliy did somehow manage to find the courage, the man might have said yes.
It’s a fantasy within a fantasy, though. In reality, the man would say nothing. His mouth is a mess of wounds and wires, blood and metal sealing his lips together. Geliy sucks in a horrified breath as he hides his face against his legs.

Normally Gerard could shrug off characters, easy as changing out of his stage clothes, but this was different. This was ripping themselves open and pinning themselves to the page; this was leaving everything behind, in the dark flickering light over the pounding guitars. And it felt like there was nothing left but the character, snarling bravado and an empty shell inside.
