It was by chance that you first met Joel Miller.
It really shouldn’t have been odd- considering he’s your neighbor, you’d think it would be completely plausible to run into each other early on and have a chat. That’s good southern manners, after all.
As it turns out, he’s actually pretty elusive. The first time you met him, it was two weeks after you'd moved in. He’d been shuffling down his front porch steps, clearly in a hurry, what looked like a children’s backpack slung over his shoulder. You’d watched him from your porch, head tilted sideways with intrigue at the surprisingly handsome neighbor who hadn’t yet shown his face.
“Sarah!” He’d called gruffly into the house behind him. “Get a move on!”
And from the navy blue painted wood, a little girl bounded outside. Wiry curls, eager brown eyes, a bright, beaming smile.
You felt your heart soften slightly at the sight of her, and understood why your reclusive neighbor maybe hadn’t quite had the time to come and introduce himself.
A little girl, a daughter, and a ring finger void of any jewelry.
A single dad.

Eugene’s almost got the wires soldered properly, when his door flies open with a bang.
“Fucking Christ,” He yells reeling back from the desk, solder all over the board he was working on. Turning, he opens his mouth to chew out the idiot who interrupted him when he sees Tommy standing there, his expression panicked, an exhausted looking Ellie on his hip, thumb in her mouth, as she leans against his shoulder, her eyes blinking slowly, “Tommy, what the Hell?”
“We have to go, they’re going to C-U-T out her B-R-A-I-N!” Tommy yells and suddenly Eugene doesn’t care much about his wires anymore.
IE: Tommy finds out the Fireflies' plans for Ellie, and he makes a friend.

He wasn’t even supposed to spend the night - she’d told him as much in the morning as she asked him to leave, didn’t even offer him an empty 'maybe I’ll see you around, sometime.' Just a one time thing, a clean break. But a few hours later, she’d gone in search of breakfast and noticed the bright yellow sticky note above her doorknob, with his full name and phone number scrawled across the middle and a smiley face in one corner.
She rolled her eyes, dropped it onto the stack of papers on her drafting table, and told herself she would throw it away later.
But - for some reason that Annabeth can’t quite rationalize - she never did.
Funny how things work out.
