    They stared at each other a long time, silence only interrupted by loud gushes of wind whistling in their ears. He couldn't remember the last time he had seen a kid. Actually, he didn't want to remember.

    "Are you alo-" A violent hit to the back of his knees made him stumble forward and he yelped in pain and surprise. Alex had time to put his hands forward before the impact, sparing himself a broken nose. He flipped around to look at his assailant, only to find an icy shade of blue glaring down at him - a shade nearly identical to that of the girl's. But the man's eyes mattered very little, when Alex realised he was holding a gun straight to his face, finger on the trigger, ready to shoot him dead.

Those days were the most dangerous, because in moments like this, with the sun shining down on the pair of them and the weight of Alex’s head on his chest, the risk of the gallows didn’t seem to matter.
