Summary
“Ed.” Stede says softly, sadly, a catch in his throat. His hands are spread, palms out, as much a surrender as an invitation.
“Don’t.”
They’re alone on the deck, moonlight catching in Stede’s pale hair. He’s too solid to be a mirage. And too unlike the Stede Ed remembers to be something that his mind would conjure up. He’s dressed simply, unkempt and weather-beaten, and there’s a looseness to his shoulders that wasn’t there before. They’re tiny differences but they make something raw and vulnerable twist in Ed’s chest. He aches with it.
He adjusts his grip on his pistol.
