“Hey. Stay still.” Jay said, very matter-of-factly. He rested his head down once more, and actually closed his eyes. There was something serene about it, something that made Matt feel more comfortable somehow. Here, in the closest he’d ever come to sex so far, he was under no obligation to perform. No eyes were on him, no cues were being taken from him, not even the gaze of the guy who had his fucking dick in his hand would rest upon him. Matt knew Jay was too high to have done that intentionally, but part of him wondered whether it was a subconscious choice. If he really did know Matt that well, to know that he wouldn’t be able to let go of himself with an audience.

“This weekend? It's Wednesday.”
“It's Thursday,” Jared says quietly. Jay looks at him open-mouthed like it's the first time he's seeing him.
“It's Thursday,” he amends. “That’s not a lot of time to prepare.”
“We’ve done more with less,” Matt counters. Jay takes the point silently. The game is on.
The only reason Matt would ever go to a family wedding is if he and Jay could get a show at The Rivoli out of it. The plan: Play the wedding, bring the house down, and get his cousin and all her cool young friends to book Nirvana the Band for an after party. The part where they pretend to be a couple, threatening decades of load-bearing repression, comes out of nowhere – at least for Matt, it does. Jay has his own plan.

Jay wants to be somewhere else, back home with the space heater at his feet. The stadium is miserable, his chair is hard and small, and his lower-back pain is flaring. He's relieved that he was able to convince Matt against more hamburgers, narrowly escaping a pickle-flavored kiss. Speaking of, Jay watches the couple on the big screen smile and wave goodbye, replaced by a bright advertisement for concessions.
"We might be next!" Matt says, turning his head close to yell in Jay's ear.
