But this is not winning, this is his path back to that peace he had in her arms all those months ago. She has now seen him as he is: that trembling, dark animal in the road, flayed open to his grieving and greedy soul, unable to escape the horrors of the open road. But Lisbon has stopped the car for him. She’s taking him home.

“Just let me finish,” Jane says. Lisbon waits, lips pursed, staring him down. It’s hard not to be a little offended. “I feel like I’m not at my full potential,” he admits, gesturing to his wounded ankle.

Jane stares wordlessly at the all-consuming fire. His stunned silence hurts them all more than any word could have. As if to steady himself against a strong current, Cho rests a hand on Jane’s shoulder.
“We can't just stand here and watch the Boss–” Rigsby can't quite say ‘burn to death’.
When Lisbon narrowly avoids being killed by a bomb meant for her, Jane decides the safest option is for them to pretend she's dead until the killer is found.

His thoughts about Lisbon range from acceptable to physically impossible. He wants to put a ring on her finger. He wants to bring her flowers. He wants to read her mind. He wants to violate the principle of impenetrability and occupy the same space as her. The simple truth of it was that Jane was scared. It was an unusual and wholly unwelcome feeling, one that Jane was unaccustomed to. He knew that Lisbon expected sex, that she was waiting for it. The idea that she might have certain expectations of him was frightening. He was out of practice, out of his comfort zone, and overcome by the depth of his own desire for her.
The sure-footed, arrogant Jane that she'd known for the last fourteen years had no standing here. He felt embarrassingly like a teenage boy around her now. Poised on a hair trigger, unable to gather his composure.

Normal students come to their masters with requests like that when they need help understanding a complicated new working, or perhaps when they’re looking for advice on a course of study to pursue. Agnieszka is more likely to tell him that she’s accidentally turned one of the other students into a toad and can’t figure out how to undo it—because she has no clue how she did it in the first place.
So Sarkan feels perfectly justified in sighing. “What did you do now?”
