Summary
Shane clings to Ryan, too. He’s famous for going for walks or out to lunch without saying a word to anyone, but now he tells Ryan before he goes. Invites him along most of the time too. Sometimes they walk around the block together in silence. Ryan’s not good with silence, but Shane is. Sometimes their hands knock into each other while they walk. Sometimes Ryan wants to grab Shane’s fingers and hold on until the world ends.
He never does.

Ryan crowds him against the car door, his arms bracketing him in. “Take me home, Shane.”
This isn’t the first time one of them’s asked. Last time it was Shane, half-drunk in Nottingham, leaning against Ryan’s hotel door. Ryan kindly rebuffed him, citing the shoot the next day. One of them always declines. That’s the move, a dance repeated a half-dozen times over the years. There’s no need to talk about it, they know what the right move is. They’re always on the same wavelength.
Shane goes to push Ryan away, but he stops when he sees Ryan’s eyes, dark and glittering as coal.
Trust me.

“You needed help,” he said simply.
“But you don’t know me. I could be dangerous, a raider or undercover FEDRA or something,” Ryan pointed out.
“I know you a little, now. You’re twenty-five, almost twenty-six, you’re probably from California, you’re not very good at not getting shot, and you trusted me. What else do I need to know?”
Taken aback by how observant he was, Ryan blanked on anything more clever to say. “Uh. My name?”
“Which is…?”
“Ryan.”
A stranger no-more, he gave Ryan a little wave. “Shane.”

“Too late, bud. Find a new partner, one who is less annoying,” Ryan joked, hoping he could get one last smile out of him.
“I wasn’t talking to you.”
