They’d been through a lot, all of them had. Everyone had tried to deal with the events in their own ways, and Cal found that keeping himself occupied and his mind clear helped him the most. Being able to extend that help to others only motivated him more.
He knew Cain operated on a similar method. Lots of working, keeping busy, fixing things. Being idle didn’t suit either of them very well. But, of course, there was no way to perfectly bounce back. That was unrealistic. There was always going to be something to knock them off balance sometimes.
Cal noticed one of these things about Cain during one of his visits.

He was making a swift exit when vibrant red hair and pale skin caught his eye, sticking out like a sore thumb. Or maybe a beacon. A beacon leaning forward with elbows on the tavern counter, engaged in what sounded like boring business talk. He paused, frozen in place and staring at the back of the one and only Diluc Ragnvindr’s head while he discussed trade with the tavern owner.
He should leave. He got what he came here for, and Diluc had no idea who he was now, so he should leave. But he was so, so fucking curious.

Had someone asked him a year ago where he thought he’d be, Cal would’ve never imagined it would be here. He stood in his dorm, faced with his reflection in the mirror, blinking the early morning exhaustion away. He combed his fingers through his hair, trying to smooth out the cowlicks from day after day of styling it to stick up. Each time he held them down, they flicked right up again.
To make matters worse, his roots were coming in and it didn’t help that they were such a starkly different color to the dye he’d been using. Small tufts of blue crept into bright red and in any other case he’d immediately be going for a touch up, but lately he didn’t quite have the time to re-dye his hair.
He was in the middle of messing with it when there was a knock at his door.

Charlotte held the mirror to where she could see all of Cain’s work, from the red eyeshadow darkening her eyelids and blending in with the sharp black of the eyeliner to the red paint on her lips, dark enough to be mistaken for black lipstick from afar. It was in the little details, too; the pink dusting of eyeshadow beneath her eyelids, the slightest hints of blush where it would naturally occur, even little designs with the eyeliner to pull it all together in the end.
“Holy shit! I look badass. Sweet work, Princess.” She raised her hand to meet his free one in a high-five.
“Thanks! It was so totally worth it to save it for the end, right?“ He held a little sparkling pot in her direction. “Want some glitter?”
She didn’t even glance in the direction. “Fuck no.”

On numerous occasions, Arai had to remind Kido to hold back when it came to roughing up punks that started stirring trouble. One, because Kanemura Enterprises was small and they shouldn’t draw much attention, and two being that even though Kido was as strong as they came– Arai didn’t want him pushing himself too much for the sake of his health.
Personally, Kido thought that second reason was bullshit. Sure, not wanting to draw attention to their small organization made sense, but what did his health have to do with any of that? Arai acted like taking breathers after strenuous activity was a signal that he was about to keel over and die at any moment.
Even if it felt that way, sometimes.
