Summary
As he pushes himself up from his desk — already mourning the crinkled and drool-dotted page that was acting as a draft for his newest short story before it became his impromptu pillow — he realizes there’s a phantom ache, stinging through his left arm.
He doesn’t bother looking down, for Todd knows exactly what he’ll see. Despite the years, the letters have never gone away completely, only faded, and Todd prefers not to see them if he doesn’t have to.
So, he ignores the twinge of his arm, and instead directs his bleary eyes to the calendar on the corner of his desk.
December 15th, 1969.
Oh. That must be why his arm hurts. It’s certainly why he was up late working.
AKA everyone has a mark on their arm with the words their soulmate will say when they fall in love. Todd's still hasn't faded, even on the tenth anniversary of his soulmate's death.

Summary
It is something of a relief to go to his room. On his bedside table, the letter sits, a burning beacon for his attention. Herlock does not try to ignore it this time, does not resist the temptation to fit his thumb under the seal and pull the envelope open.
The paper is crisp, folded neatly in a way Herlock could never achieve. He slides his fingers along the crease anyways, imagining the careful hands that followed this very same path all the way across the ocean. He pretends, for just a moment, that there’s a lingering scent on the paper. He takes it all in, because this is all he gets for another two months. He wants it to last.

Summary
Reki sort of prides himself on knowing Langa better than anyone else. Besides his mom, obviously. And their other friends (their real friends, not the people at school) can at least read Langa pretty well. But Reki can tell what Langa’s thinking, in the same way that Langa can tell what Reki’s thinking.
Most of the time.
Because, even though Langa is literally the greatest, sometimes Reki can’t quite figure him out.
There are…things he does. Things he says. Little moments where Reki can’t quite puzzle out why he’s doing or saying that thing, and they stand out because they don’t quite fit into the picture that is their relationship.

Summary
Miles is only really pretending to work when there’s a knock on his office door. It’s already 1:42, the clock proclaims, although he’s spent the last half hour trying to keep his mind off the time. He hasn’t done a very good job.
It’s just three gentle raps against the wood, but Miles is out of his chair and across the room within seconds. He can’t be allowed to psych himself out, not over this. So he grabs the handle of the door and gives himself a heartbeat to panic, before he’s wrenching it open.
On the other side, just like he expected–but perhaps didn’t manage to internalize–is Phoenix.
AKA Miles is living in Berlin, and invites Phoenix to come visit to help with a case. But, when Phoenix is around, there are some things he has to try very hard not to think about.

Summary
Kojiro has heard so many different things about being in love–people who have told him it’s the best, worst, most important, or most pointless experience he’ll ever have in his life. Grand fairytales which describe the emotion like floating on a cloud, and cynical dramas that paint a picture of a dagger through the heart.
Kojiro finds it is none of those things, at least not consistently. There’s no telling how he’ll feel about being in love from moment to moment, and the illness is equally unpredictable for that reason.
He thinks he’s supposed to regret being in love with Kaoru–regret he feels so strongly for someone who will never love him back that it’s killing him slowly–but he doesn’t. That’s the only thing that stays the same; Kojiro can’t bring himself to regret feeling anything for Kaoru. After all, Kaoru has been one of the most important fixtures in Kojiro’s life, and Kojiro sometimes thinks, late at night when he can’t block the dark thoughts out, he might as well be the reason for his death too.
AKA a hanahaki au where Joe is doing a predictably bad job of not dying.
