Summary
Something in Chrissy’s chest snaps. She pushes the chair back, its legs grinding against the floor so hard that it almost tips and falls over entirely. She stands as swiftly as she did in the cafeteria, because if there is one thing Chrissy is good at, it’s running away from a scene. ‘I’m sorry, Ms Kelley – class, you know –,’ and her hand is on the doorknob, and she’s halfway out the door.
‘Chrissy, you can’t keep running away –’
She doesn’t hear the rest of what Ms Kelley says because the door slams shut on the words. Her face is set as she opens the door onto the main corridor, keeping her chin tucked into her chest. She can feel her eyes start to prickle. What if the counselor calls her mother, or says something to the principal, or something gets out to someone …
