It felt like a brand. Like Ilya had whipped him across the face and he wore the mark in front of everybody. It was sick, that it excited him, to wear his hair the way Ilya liked it in public, it was sick, but he wore that sickness with a thrill. He couldn’t stop smiling. It felt like his face would crack under the force of it. It felt like he’d earned this. Because he had, he’d fought for it, for so long. Had thought the moment the world found out about his and Ilya’s private life, over a year ago now, that he would never have this again, had shrunk away in misery and shame from all of it. Never again. He never wanted to go back.
