Penelope's chest begins to ache slightly at the laughter that rings out in response, she had expected to be a topic of conversation, that was only natural. But this was almost cruel, diminishing her to only her status when they had never even laid eyes upon her. Three years spent predominantly alone has weakened her defenses, no longer needing to shrug off whichever slight or insult her family had aimed her way.
She pulls back her shoulders and reminds herself that she does not have to stay if society proves to be more of this. She will give it a chance, introduce herself to her neighbours (perhaps avoiding the men), attend any balls or soirees she could get an invitation to and simply see if she fits. Her desire for company was not so great that she was willing to suffer for it. If the Ton proved to not be for her, then Abbey Hall awaits her back in Yorkshire. The only thing her late husband truly provided for her, a secure home should the worst happen and she had not managed to produce an heir.

The boy she’s loved since she first laid eyes on him all those years ago, disparaging her for all the Ton to hear. She’d put up with it when he’d implied she did not count as a woman. Helped to free him from a planned entrapment by her own cousin, to her own family's detriment. Accepted that he only saw her as a friend. She had worked very hard on that part.
Penelope is a lady. She does not curse. But this is a step too damn far.
In one night she’s discovered her cousin Jack has been fleecing the Ton and has chosen to run, leaving the Featheringtons ruined and practically destitute. Her best friend Eloise has discovered that she is Lady Whistledown, declared them no longer friends and ravaged her bedroom. They had fought so viciously, words spoken in the heat of the moment, explanations and apologies ignored.
Any other night she would have fled in tears at Colin’s words. But tonight? After all this? She is fuming.

Penelope wakes up Saturday morning with her head absolutely buzzing, she's expected to be hungover but this is a new side effect.
Burying her head under her pillow, she realises that the buzzing is not from her hangover but its her phone, endless notifications blowing it up. Instagram notifications? Why would she have so many Instagram notifications?
Penelope vaguely remembers snapping a series of pictures of her, Edwina and Genevieve going wild on the dance floor at the club last night but she wouldn't usually post them to Instagram. God, hopefully she hasn't posted a stray tit or something.
The number times Colin has been tagged is astounding, it looks as though the post is blowing up. Penelope has no idea how they've even found her post, she rarely has him on her page and never tags him. He does have a few unhinged super fans, maybe they have alerts set up for her posts?
Jesus, poor Colin. What the fuck has she posted?

For Colin, no matter how many countries he visited, how many people he met, how useful he was to the crown, he was haunted by Penelope.
After the first month he started to fill a journal with words that are written about her, for her, hoping to find his way towards understanding and forgiveness (what choice did he truly have, between forgiving her and never seeing her again?). Letters piled up unsent, but he could stop producing them - his words spilling out of him like air.
By the fifth month of his travels, he had started to hallucinate her, catching glimpses of her red hair across a piazza. One night, half-deranged, he trailed the sound of her voice through the streets to find only a dead-end and her absence.
Another night, boots frozen to cobblestones he was trapped under the glare of her bright blue eyes peaking out in shock from under a heavy cloak. A cart toppled behind him, a moment of distraction. When he looked back, the spirit had disappeared.He no longer knew if he was searching for something or fleeing from it. In the seventh month he returned home, and found it was fundamentally changed.
