Harvey didn’t press for an explanation. He reached for his glasses before settling back on his pillow, now with a better view of the ceiling. I rested my forehead on his shoulder until our skin felt stuck together, waiting for swirling thoughts to come to rest. When I found my voice, it was small.
“It feels almost too good to be real.”
“You know, after— well, everything,” Harvey said after a while. “Part of me thought we’d never...”
“Yeah, me too.” Old miseries prickled beneath the surface like blood pooling under the skin.
“I’m— I didn’t mean to bring that up.” His voice was rough and low. He turned over, and we were face to face. “But sometimes, I’m not sure this hasn’t all been a dream.”
“You’re awake,” I said with a hesitant smile, giving his wrist a gentle pinch.
My heart bloomed with his widening grin. Harvey pulled me close again, gentle fingers tilting my chin. He raised my eyes to his and whispered, “This is real.”
