Summary
He notices it the most when she thinks no one is watching her. Her gaze is strangely vacant, empty if she's not focused on anything at the moment, her nails in her mouth. Emily's eyes light up when he steps into her line of sight, and at first, he's giddily happy about it, but soon he realizes that he's the only thing keeping her tethered, keeping her afloat. Aaron can see her slipping away, and his heart breaks every time her smile turns tight and fake, eyes sad. Emily keeps shrugging off all of his attempts to help, claiming that she's fine and that he makes her happy. It's not a lie and he knows that, but watching the person he loves fall away to nothing before his very eyes makes the place between his ribs burn.

Summary
Across from her, Jack is drenching his pancakes in a sea of syrup. The sun streaming in through the windows makes his hair glow almost white, lights up the syrup on his plate to a warm, honey like color as it drips over his pancakes. There are fresh berries in a bowl; raspberries and blueberries and blackberries so vibrant they look fake. The birds chirp outside, sweet and carefree.
It’s a good day. A happy one, a rare weekend off. She should enjoy it, take the opportunity to go out with Aaron and Jack, spend the day with them beneath the sun.
But she can’t even finish her breakfast.
Or, Emily has a bad day and Aaron tries to help her through it.

Summary
So, finally admitting defeat, they establish rules. Both of them like rules and setting parameters; they are mutually agreed in the positivity that comes with a framework they can cling to, a cornerstone so to speak. Careful delineation makes this whole thing between them seem much more reasonable, as if being able to say oh no, it’s nothing serious. Oh, we never cross boundaries. There are restrictions in place, lines we do not cross makes the lies that they are trying to tell themselves more believable.
This thing between them, they agree, is just sex.
