Summary
But George pulled through. He recovered, and he woke again, and for a few, blessed moments, he laid eyes upon Bertha and did not frown or flinch, simply smiled at her and held her hand and told her “I’ll be quite alright, my dear.”
The trouble is, Bertha made the altogether foolish mistake of believing he meant they would be alright, as well.

“C’mon, let’s get you home.” Clark holds out his hand, helping Lois up from her chair like she’s a character in an Old Hollywood movie. When he presses a kiss to the back of her hand, mindful of the few reporters sitting at the outer edges of the bullpen, she can’t help it, she grins.

Summary
“What is your mother’s ambition for you?” Gladys asks. “A baron? An earl?”
The girl flushes, a deep crimson that spreads from her neck all the way to the tips of her ears. “Nothing below a viscount,” she murmurs.
Gladys hums. “Well, some might call that reasonable. My mother insisted on a duke.”

Summary
Lois is a pain in the ass. She’s comfortable with this. Men usually aren’t. She’s confident and pragmatic and argumentative, and never learned how to leave well enough alone - all things that make her a very good journalist, and a usually very short-term girlfriend. ‘Sharp and uncompromising’, Perry had called her in the speech he gave when she won her Pulitzer. It’d meant almost as much to her as the award itself. But as much as Clark loves to bicker with her - surprisingly straight-backed when defending a position he believes in, even if she disagrees - he never stays annoyed. Sometimes, she’s pretty sure he argues with her just to flirt.
If she’s being honest with herself, Lois has been actively trying not to get sweet on Clark for most of the time she’s known him. It’s annoying to her that it hasn’t worked. He’s annoying to her. He’s also surprising, and charming, and exciting - all things she can’t believe she believes about a Kansas-raised farm boy, no matter how good looking he is.
But then, there’s also this —
He tells her he’s Superman six minutes into their second date.

Summary
He gets stuck at the short-straw desk right next to the pillar that no one else wants; but it’s right behind her and she catches him listening to her rattling ideas off to Jimmy more than once. She’s not used to having someone there, encroaching on the one corner of her workspace that was devoid of people. And he’s so … cumbersome. It’s hard to ignore his presence. Not to mention he drops shit constantly.

Summary
George Russell is one of America's most renowned pastry chefs. If only he could convince Clay to let him stop taking these wedding cake special orders. He hates wedding cakes. And he especially hates dealing with brides. He'll just handle this last one, for this Bertha Connolly, and then he'll get back to what he actually enjoys.
In which George is grumpy but besotted, Bertha is engaged to someone who definitely isn't him, and the rest of our cast of characters have to deal with all the headaches that ensue from those two central facts.

Summary
"We will return home as we planned, and then Mother and Father will both follow.” Gladys felt a strange mixture of pride and shame flicker through her as she realized just how much she sounded like Mother as she spoke. So self-confident, planning, plotting. She was mildly horrified to realize she rather relished the feeling.
Her parents were, after all, currently at odds. The two people in her life who had left such a lasting impression of how important a role love could truly play in a marriage—at odds with each other. Separated, even, Father having retreated to his ridiculous club and Mother all but holing herself up in the house on 61st.
It simply would not do.
