Summary
The Holy Kingdom of Faerghus has always had close ties with the Church. Dimitri had a more pragmatic view of religion compared to the kings who had come before him, but he saw no need to sever ties with powerful allies and inspire political unrest.
His dedication wasn't at all influenced by the nun who currently lived in Garreg Mach and was famous for bestowing his blessings on the needy. Not at all. That the King always went to mass on Sunday and never missed confession was only to show a good example to the citizens of Faerghus and not lose face in front of his religious peers.

Sleep didn't come easily to him, not even after the war. The long summer days suited him; the sun rose a few hours after midnight, and he didn't have to do his sword drills in the dark.
In winter, the night watch made sure to keep a few torches lit and the braziers warm for their king. He hoped they did this kindly, to humour his whims. Wary of interrupting the clockwork operations of Castle Fhirdiad, he'd never asked.
In the dark, the voices of the dead were louder and demanded more attention.

Byleth Eisner was scary. He seldom spoke unless asked a direct question, the expression on his face unchanging and his eyes flat with disinterest. He conversed with people in the same way Dimitri had seen him kill bandits during the last day of camp: distant and unmoved.
But he held his sword as if it was an extension of his body and he moved with the precision of a knife point.
So: he was useful and he taught well and there was something almost charming about the clumsy way he tried to connect with people.
Dimitri wanted him.
