Summary
Darry doesn’t remember hanging up the phone. He doesn’t remember calling for Soda. He doesn’t remember getting in the car, or the screeching of his tires as they pull away from the curb outside their house that hasn’t felt like home in a week. All he knows is that for the first time in longer than he ever wants to have it be again, he knows where Ponyboy is.
~
Darry has been waiting for a week to know what has happened to his little brother. It's quite possibly the longest week of his whole life, and the ending starts with a phonecall.

Summary
“What’s spooked ya, kid?” He asks knowingly. Pony immediately wants to deny that anything has spooked him. But he knows there’s no point. It’s not exactly a secret amongst them that his nightmares don’t exactly follow positive experiences in his life. Instead, he gets up and pads out to his bedroom. Soda and Darry wait patiently until he comes back a moment later, a yearbook sitting uncomfortably in his palms. He thumbs through until he finds the page that will serve as an explanation and passes it to his brothers.
It's been a little while since nightmares have plagued the Curtis household. Tonight, they're back with a vengeance.

Summary
"Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying. He didn’t make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks. I hadn’t seen him cry in years, not even when Mom and Dad had been killed. (I remembered the funeral. I had sobbed in spite of myself; Soda had broken down and bawled like a baby; but Darry had only stood there, his fists in his pockets and that look on his face, the same helpless, pleading look that he was wearing now.)"
Ponyboy may think that Darry hadn't cried when their parents had been killed, but he doesn't know about the time between his oldest brother getting the phone call, and arriving back at their house.

Summary
This is my future, Darry thought, a cold lump in his throat. He fished his dad’s work boots from the closet. Found the worn gloves, pressed them to his nose and smelled leather and sweat. This was it, everything he was and could’ve been, reduced to the strength of his hands.
“Darry,” Soda said, with unfathomable optimism coating his tongue. “We’re gonna be okay.”

Summary
“I’m fine,” Darry mutters again, but it’s even more hollow now, more useless. Soda’s still crouched at his other side, one hand steady on Darry’s wrist like he’s grounding him there.
“No, you’re not,” Pony says, but there’s no judgment in it. Just truth. “And that’s okay.”
Darry lets out a breath that sounds almost like a laugh, except it’s broken in half. He drags both hands down his face and then presses his palms into the edge of the table like he needs something to hold on to. “I ain’t ‘sposed to fall apart. Not in front of you two.”
“Why not?” Pony asks. “We fall apart in front of you all the time.”
—
A month and a half after the funeral, Darry’s doing his best to hold everything together. But the broken pipe, the long days, and one sharp argument with Ponyboy push him past his limit. When he breaks down in the kitchen, it’s his brothers who help him — quiet, steady, and refusing to leave. It still hurts. But they’re in it together.

Summary
Darry’s eyes flicked away again, like he couldn’t hold Soda’s gaze for long without something cracking open. “I dunno. You’re scared, and I can’t even comfort you properly.”
“You’re comforting me right now,” Soda said quietly.
Darry snorted, not mean, just doubtful. “By sittin’ here like an idiot and talkin’ about bills?”
“Yeah. By sittin’ here and tryin’,” Soda said, a little more firmly now. “By not brushin’ me off. By admitting you don’t know what to do. That counts, D. Y'think I need some perfect speech? I don’t. I just need you.”
Darry let out a breath and leaned back in his chair. His arms crossed over his chest, like he needed to hold himself together.
—
Sodapop wakes in a cold sweat, haunted by a nightmare he can’t remember, only that it was about Darry and Pony and losing them. When he finds Darry still awake at the kitchen table, buried in bills and silence, the two brothers end up talking in a way they haven’t in years. It’s clumsy at first — Darry doesn’t always have the words, and Soda doesn’t always know how to ask — but somewhere between the hot chocolate and the half-light of the early morning, they start to figure it out.Bookmarked by eternity_can_wait
