Veritas watches silently as she leaves. Her meaning is clear, and eerily pointed regarding his own inner turmoil.
It would be far better for Aventurine to find his own way back to the living.
But Veritas is only a man. Never is that clearer than each time he comes face to face with Aventurine dangling himself over the brink. If his damned gambler cannot pull himself free from the abyss, then it falls to Veritas to make the journey there and back again for him.

Summary
The man extends a hand. “Aventurine. A pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
A pause. The temperature of the room drops several degrees.
Veritas lowers his drink. Is that meant as a threat?
Though Veritas immigrated to Pier Point only recently, it was impossible to avoid much of the IPC’s more grandiose propaganda. Who wouldn’t know of the Strategic Investment Department’s Ten Stonehearts? Names meant to strike fear and awe, the masses reverent to the power and wealth condensed in their Cornerstones. Countless dimwits would prostrate themselves to bask in the shadow cast by their influence, but Veritas is no such fool.

Ratio accepts the Intelligentsia Guild's invitation ten years later, and meets Aventurine of Stratagems by chance at a bar on the winter solstice.

Summary
Instead, he is the same as ever, toying with Ratio’s emotions, poking and prodding and provoking, all for his own amusement. An annoying gnat, an ephemeral moth to the flame. Ratio cannot let it get to him. He has long accepted the bruised state of his heart and ego.
He has a trip to pack for, and lecture notes to prepare before he leaves. He can deal with questions of Aventurine’s pretenses when faced with the man himself.

The Stonehearts and Astral Express are hosting a post-Penacony celebration aboard the Radiant Feldspar. Ratio is only there to finally be able to check up on Aventurine in person.

Summary
Yellow eyes blink rapidly at Aventurine, before drifting sleepily closed. The cushion-creature pushes its—top? covering?—upper-most layer into Aventurine’s hand, velvety but distinctly bread-like to the touch.
Bread? No, that’s not it. More like… cake?
Oh.
He remembers now. That photo he found, and the professor’s lovely blush at being confronted with the lock screen of those two creations.

“Before all… this,” he waves his hand at the room around them, “before the IPC, before Diamond and Jade. You know, before.”

Summary
Ratio raised his own glass with some reluctance, and with the rest of them, took a sip—
—just as something slimy rolled down his tongue.
He swallowed. It felt a little bit like a spot of phlegm that would build up during a cold. He cleared his throat, once, twice.
“Avent—” he tried, before sound closed up and he grabbed at his neck, choking on a cough that would not come.
“...Ratio?”
Heimlich maneuver. He could—he could do it with the chair, Ratio thought, but he could not pry his own hand from futilely scratching at his throat. It would be no use. He could feel it, the phlegm growing in his throat, expanding up the back of his tongue and down his esophagus, like something more unnatural than a common bit of food.
A hostile Borisin ship is an unfortunate place to navigate the fragile beginnings of a new relationship, and perhaps an even more unfortunate place to be assassinated.

Aventurine hates the heat. He hates everything about it. He hates how it makes him sweat, and he hates how it reminds him of Sigonia and an era of his life he'd much rather forget, thank you very much. He hates the heat and all the pain it brings.
(Now if the good doctor could stop looking so damned hot fanning himself like that while Aventurine wallows in his misery, that'd be great.)
Aventurine and Ratio visit a desert planet together for a business trip. Things don't quite go exactly as expected.

Summary
He can’t think of it as an it, or as a construct. Even if he knows it is, even if he knows exactly what he’s doing, and that the real one would never approve of this, perhaps be horrified by the idea. Only a few hours of existence. How much worse a person would Aventurine be, if he didn’t want him to enjoy them too?
(Aventurine commissions a Dreamscape replica of Ratio for a one-night stand. It immediately gains self-awareness. Nobody is happy.)

It’s only once his eyes come back into focus that he realizes he’d been staring across the room.
Someone’s staring back, too. He’s swaying along to the music, standing within the crowd but on his own. He winks and Veritas breaks away, looking down and tracing the rim of his glass.
“Care to dance?”
A series of surprises, coincidences, and luck bring Veritas into contact with a mysterious stranger. He doesn't believe in magic, but it finds him anyway, and he falls a little in love with life along the way.
