wolfstar raising harry; remus pov; dealing with grief, sadness, trauma, betrayal, loneliness; learning how to love again and to accept it; how the memory of james and lily will live on not only through remus, sirius, harry, or even peter, but through love and laughter and kindness; how maddening yet gentle sirius and remus are; to fall in love and break, then to build and live again with one another; to appreciate what you have now, and look towards the future whilst holding the past at a tight grip; to see harry grow not just as james’ and lily’s child but as himself: a boy born from sacrifice and unconditional love, and strengthened by pain and loss. this fic is fucking gorgeous. written seamlessly to portray caveats of abundant emotion and thoughts. the exploration of remus‘ character before during and after the war. navigating and finding himself buried in the rubble and trapped in a body served by the moon. to still love and accept sirius as his everything despite it all. to still have the capacity to care for the childhood with peter. to find the power to hold his hand out and let james guide him through dark and light times. to keep a promise he made to lily close to his heart. to see the people he loves and lost in the people he has now. this is a beautiful beautiful fic. it really is the art of getting by.

Summary
Well, it’s heady as fuck, and disappointingly boring pensioner ship aside, the Dark Lord has at least provided proper whiskey and wine, which really does not help.
Fuck him, Sirius is only human, and so he curls his fingers around James’ wrist when he presses his hand to Sirius’ hip and counts the beats of his pulse. He leans into James’ side as he hasn’t allowed himself since fifth year, all careless arms slung around shoulders and temples pressed to temples. He turns his head in when he whispers into James’ ear and allows himself to breathe; the scent of his shampoo and his aftershave, a hint of sweat underneath that makes his throat go dry.
In short, Sirius is digging his own fucking grave because he has spent five years keeping an ironclad grip on his yearning, and now it’s like James has been spread out before him, all the parts Sirius has denied himself offered with a smirk and a wink.
An undercover mission for the Order, one questionable idea about pretending to be a couple, and five years of keeping his secrets unravel around Sirius. Sometimes, it has to get worse before it gets better.
