“You’re nominated for this one, aren’t you?” He whispers, and Feng Xin knows he’s more than slightly tipsy by the way he holds the flute in his hand.
“What’s it to you?”
“I bet you’ll lose.”
Feng Xin almost laughs, “of course you do, and what if I win?”
Mu Qing pauses, as if genuinely thinking about it, as if he hadn’t expected Feng Xin to win at all which- okay, rude.
“I’ll kiss you.” He says, resolute and determined. “You’re never gonna get it anyway.”
What the fuck. “What the fuck.”
“Like I said,” Mu Qing says, taking another sip from his champagne, far too nonchalant for him to not be completely out-of-his-mind drunk, “you’re never gonna get it anyway.”

Summary
It ends like this: Xie Lian’s shackles shatter, Jun Wu screams.
The sound, furious and utterly terrifying, reverberates around them, “How dare you?” He throws a sword to the ground. “How dare you break it?”
The explosion of spiritual energy leaves deep gouges in the walls of the mountain, evidence of its power, of what it took to break it.
Xie Lian’s face hardens behind Hua Cheng’s, and Feng Xin thinks he looks more like the confident crown prince he used to know, always ready for a battle, a challenge. He raises his head to speak when Jun Wu turns, locking eyes with Mu Qing.
“You,” he says, tone sick and disgusting with something akin to an overwhelming fake kindness, “you’ll do.”

Summary
“Look, okay–” Xingqiu starts, voice deceptively steady. “I’m sorry, Chongyun. It was a terrible idea, I’ll see myself out.”
“Wait–” Chongyun reaches out, with much more assurance than he feels, and abruptly realizes he doesn’t quite have anything to say. “I– could you recap for me?”
Xingqiu’s eyes widen slightly, hands in the middle of gathering his belongings.
“Just to make sure we’re on the same page.” Chongyun adds, for clarity.
He looks like he wants to say something. The telltale scrunch of his nose when something’s on the tip of his tongue, but Chongyun pays it no mind. After all, they should’ve stopped knowing each other this way years ago.
“I–” Xingqiu clears his throat, “will you go as my date for the 37th Feiyun Commerce Guild gala?”
or, Xingqiu and Chongyun break up, trip and fall in love all over again.

Summary
Herein lies the problem: Feng Xin has horrible, ridiculous, extremely inconvenient and unrequited feelings for Mu Qing. He doesn’t know when he’d started thinking of Mu Qing’s eyeroll as endearing rather than extremely fucking irritating, he doesn’t know when he’d started thinking of him when the sun sets, an idle wish for his company on his tongue, he doesn’t know when he’d started buying cherry bread to bring home because he knows Mu Qing likes it.
Herein lies a second problem: Mu Qing has abhorrent, incorrigible, inconvenient, and extremely unrequited feelings for Feng Xin. He fell for him in high school, in a June afternoon, after a particularly nasty fight that ended in avoidance for weeks. Feng Xin had brought him cherries, hand picked with the effort Feng Xin only puts into things he cares about, an apology stuttered out of a shaking voice, a plea to stay.
He’s been annoyingly, unfortunately in love with him ever since.or, Mu Qing and Feng Xin fall in love on a beach.

Summary
His thoughts are interrupted by a crash at the door, Xie Lian falling through a hastily drawn distance shortening array, clutching a set of papers like his life depends on it. Maybe it does, Xie Lian has always had the unlucky trait of trouble following his every step.
“Feng Xin,” Xie Lian says, breathless, “Feng Xin, Mu Qing left us letters.”
“What-” He starts, Xie Lian pushes past him, laying the papers on the table.
“Mu Qing he- he left us letters, Feng Xin.” He smiles, something happy and uncontrollable and full of longing, “they go all the way back to Xianle, Feng Xin, Feng Xin he left us letters.”
or, Mu Qing dies, Feng Xin and Xie Lian are left to pick up the pieces.

Summary
Even now, he doesn’t look real. He’s too blue, too out of place here. He looks like royalty. A tapestry woven with careful precision and attention, and Feng Xin wants nothing more than to pull the threads and watch it burn. Soft skin marred by marks of red and ash. He doesn’t want his majesty. Not when he knows what’s underneath.
There’s a pause before Feng Xin speaks again. “Do you want to have dinner?”
“I thought we left that behind.” His tone is light, forced, bordering on humour and Feng Xin thinks he hates it. There’s too much there, he thinks. Too much of what could've been, what wasn’t, what they left behind.
“I’m not asking you out, asshole. I have pasta,” he snipes, and convinces himself he can’t feel the salt on his tongue. There was nothing to hope for here.
