Because the thing was, when Bob introduced you to his friends, you had gotten along so well to the point that now that you were broken up, they were still very much your own friends – so you had gotten invited to celebrate the new year at the Watchtower, bound to be there anyway, like it had to hurt no matter how hard he tried to move on. When Yelena stops talking in the middle of her sentence, nothing on Bob’s face falters or indicates he has noticed the difference, and when she watches him as he looks across the room, she doesn’t even need to turn around to know where he’s looking – who he’s looking at.

You want to reach for him, want to do as much as let your hand brush against his in comfort, it’s almost a reflex, one that you have been fighting to repress those past few days, and today is no exception. Your hand folds back onto itself and Bob notices, his heart clenching with the ache of knowing he’s doing this to himself. At least it’s a bit less painful when he reminds himself he’s only doing it to protect you, from him somehow.
